Usually, people enjoy eating dairy products, believing they are safe and rich in protein. However, a new study has revealed that cheese made from milk may increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Swedish researchers reached this conclusion after conducting a large-scale study. After analysing 24 years of health data, it was found that unfermented dairy products can raise the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In particular, milk and unfermented cheese were linked to a higher risk.
Increased Diabetes Risk In Milk And Cheese Consumers
Researchers collected dietary data from 26,461 individuals between 1991 and 1996, then monitored them until 2020. When the researchers analysed their intake of dairy products, they found that 17% of the participants had developed type 2 diabetes. These individuals tended to consume more dairy—especially unfermented milk and cheese.
It was concluded that high consumption of milk and unfermented cheese significantly increases the risk of developing diabetes. It can also lead to obesity and other lifestyle-related health issues.
Benefits Of Fermented Cheese
According to the study, consuming 100 grams of unfermented milk increases the risk of diabetes by 4%. On the other hand, consuming 100 grams of fermented milk or dairy products reduces the risk by 3%.
The study also found that unfermented cheese, such as mozzarella, cottage cheese, ricotta, and cream cheese, increases the risk—particularly in men. In contrast, fermented cheeses like cheddar, parmesan, Swiss, and Gouda are associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.
The study warns that non-fermented cheese should be consumed in moderation. Overconsumption can not only raise the risk of diabetes but also contribute to other health problems.
