A Minnesota state representative and her spouse were killed and a state senator and his wife were wounded in what officials said were targeted shootings early Saturday at their homes near Minneapolis.

A suspect impersonating a police officer remained at large, according to authorities.

State Rep. Melissa Hortman, a former state House speaker, and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed “in what appears to be a politically motivated assassination,” Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said at a news conference, calling it “an unspeakable tragedy.”

In a separate incident just miles away, state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were wounded at their home.

The City of Brooklyn Park said on its Facebook page that its police department had “issued a shelter in place order in a 3-mile radius of Edinburgh Golf course for an emergency event.”
