Mohamed Salah is named FWA Footballer of the Year as Liverpool star is rewarded for stellar season with staggering 90 PER CENT of votes

Mohamed Salah has been voted as the Football Writers’ Assocation (FWA) Footballer of the Year after an incredible season at Liverpool.

The Egyptian notched a staggering 90 per cent of votes to win the award – the most by any player this century – beating out the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry and Wayne Rooney.

Salah has scored 33 goals and provided 23 assists across all competitions this season, including 28 goals in the Premier League.

His performances helped Arne Slot lead the Reds to their 20th English top-flight title in his debut season, levelling rivals Manchester United for the most ever. 

This is a record-equalling third time the winger has won the award, having also been honoured for his efforts in 2017-18 and 2021-22 – Henry is the only other player to win it as many times as Salah.

Salah’s Liverpool team-mate Virgil van Dijk was his closest challenger, with the centre back finishing second in the voting.

Behind the Dutchman was Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, who has scored 26 goals in all competitions this season, and was pivotal in ending the Magpies’ 56-year trophy drought, scoring against Liverpool in the final.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s Declan Rice finished fourth, recognised for his efforts in both the Premier League and the Champions League. Outside of the aforementioned four, 15 other players received votes.

These were: Bruno Fernandes, Chris Wood, Alexis Mac Allister, Morgan Gibbs White, Ryan Gravenberch, Trent Alexander Arnold, Jacob Murphy, Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer, Jean Phillipe Mateta, Murillo, Dominik Szoboszlai.

Phil Foden took the award home last season, having been pivotal in helping Manchester City win a record-breaking fourth straight Premier League title.

This is the 97th individual annual or monthly award Salah has won for club and country throughout his illustrious career.

Salah remains the only African player to have ever won the FWA Footballer of the Year award.

The award has now been won 16 times by a Liverpool player, more than any other club.

Behind the Reds are Tottenham and Man United, both tied with nine winners.

FWA chairman John Cross showered Salah with glittering praises after the forward capped off another historic season with the award.

Cross said: ‘Rarely has there been a more popular winner than Mo. His overwhelming victory is just a reflection of an incredible season.

‘He continues to rewrite the record books and his performances this season have obviously been key to Liverpool’s 20th title.

‘It’s been a privilege watching him this season and it will be a privilege to welcome him to our dinner to celebrate his success.’
