Mohammed Shami’s relatives are implicated in an MNREGA fraud in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh. The District Magistrate confirmed fraudulent wage disbursement involving 18 people.

India and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) fast bowler Mohammed Shami‘s relatives are among several individuals implicated in a district-level investigation into an alleged fraud involving Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA).
According to a report by the news agency PTI, the District Magistrate (DM) of the Amroha district of Uttar Pradesh, Nidhi Gupta Vats announced late Wednesday evening that a preliminary investigation confirmed the allegations of fraudulent wage disbursement under the MNREGA scheme. MNREGA is a rural livelihood policy that provides rural households across the country the security of at least 100 days of guaranteed labor.
Orders to suspend the implicated workers listed as workers with MNREGA, register a formal police report and initiate action under the Panchayati Raj Act have been issued.
“The investigation by local officials revealed that 18 individuals received MNREGA wages without performing any work. Among those implicated include Mohammed Shami’s sister Shabina, Shabina’s husband Ghaznavi, Shabina’s three brothers-in-law Aamir Suhail, Nasruddin and Shekhu, along with sons and daughters of village head Gule Ayesha,” the reported quoted the DM as saying.
Ayesha, who is the mother-in-law of Shami’s sister and current village head, is said to be allegedly at the center of this scandal.
The DM added that fraudulent entries were registered in the MNREGA job cards in January 2021 and the individuals received wages in their bank accounts until August 2024-25 without performing any labor. She also directed the recovery of the misappropriated funds and the seizure of Ayesha’s accounts.
The investigation was launched following recent media reports about the fraud in the past week. Initial investigations reportedly point to the involvement of the then Village Development Officer (VDO), Assistant Programme Officer (APO), operator, Gram Pradhan and individuals close to the Gram Pradhan.
Shami is currently playing in IPL 2025 for SRH. He hasn’t had the best of starts to the tournament, picking just two wickets in three matches while conceding more than 30 runs in each of them. SRH will play defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday at the Eden Gardens.
Before the tournament, Shami won the ICC 2025 Champions Trophy with India in the UAE.
