Mohini Ekadashi fast is observed on Vaishakh Shukla Ekadashi Tithi. It is believed that those who observe this fast attain virtue and eventual salvation
Falling on a Thursday makes Mohini Ekadashi particularly auspicious, as devotees worship Lord Vishnu on both occasions. (News18 Hindi)
This year, the fast of Mohini Ekadashi will be observed on Thursday, May 8, 2025. Falling on a Thursday makes this Ekadashi particularly auspicious, as devotees worship Lord Vishnu on both occasions. Observing the Mohini Ekadashi fast alongside the Thursday fast is believed to bring double the spiritual benefits.
However, this year, Bhadra will also occur on Mohini Ekadashi, from 05:35 AM to 12:29 PM, with its presence in Patal Lok (the netherworld). As a result, it will have no adverse effect on Earth, and all auspicious rituals and prayers can still be performed during this time.
If you are also keeping the fast for Mohini Ekadashi, Dr Krishna Kumar Bhargava, an astrologer from Tirupati, shares the fasting story, auspicious timings, and Parana details of Mohini Ekadashi.
Mohini Ekadashi Vrat Katha
Astrologer Dr Bhargava shared that the Mohini Ekadashi fast is observed on Vaishakh Shukla Ekadashi Tithi. It is believed that those who observe this fast attain virtue and eventual salvation.
As narrated by Lord Krishna to Yudhishthira, the story is as follows:
Once, there was a city named Bhadravati on the banks of the Saraswati River, ruled by King Dyutiman. A wealthy and pious merchant named Dhanpal lived there. He was devoted to Lord Vishnu and regularly engaged in religious and charitable activities. He had built rest houses and food shelters in several places and had planted numerous trees for the welfare of others.
Dhanpal had five sons, the youngest of whom, Dhrishtabuddhi, led a sinful life. He insulted his father and ancestors, consumed alcohol and meat, and squandered his father’s wealth on immoral acts. Dhanpal, disheartened by his youngest son, eventually expelled him from the house.
After selling off his jewellery, Dhrishtabuddhi survived for some time, then turned to stealing. He was eventually caught and imprisoned, where he suffered greatly. After completing his sentence, he was banished from the kingdom.
One day, weakened by hunger and thirst, Dhrishtabuddhi wandered into the ashram of Sage Kaudinya, who had just returned from bathing in the Ganga. A few drops of Ganga water accidentally fell on Dhrishtabuddhi, instantly bringing clarity to his mind. He bowed to the sage and confessed all his sins, seeking a path to redemption.
Sage Kaudinya advised him to observe the upcoming Mohini Ekadashi fast, explaining that by worshipping Lord Vishnu with devotion, his sins would be absolved. Following the sage’s guidance, Dhrishtabuddhi observed the fast with sincerity. By Vishnu’s grace, his sins were cleansed, and at the end of his life, he attained salvation, ascending to Vaikuntha (Vishnu’s abode) on Garuda, the divine eagle.
