Chandra Arya, a Member of Parliament in Canada from Nepean, officially announced his candidacy to become the country’s next Prime Minister on Thursday (local time).
Arya in a post on X announced that his mission is “rebuild Canada” through a “small, efficient” government.
Arya will be running to replace outgoing Prime Minister and his Liberal Party boss Justin Trudeau and would join the other Indian-origin candidate Anita Anand, the Canadian transportation minister, in the race to be the next Prime Minister as well as chief of the Liberals.
He thanked Trudeau for his service this week after the Canadian PM announced his resignation in a conference outside Rideau Cottage. He said the outgoing PM deserves credit for the reforms he has brought to NAFTA and pensions.
“Let us give credit where it’s due—under his leadership, Canada saw significant successes: renegotiating NAFTA, reforming the Canada Pension Plan, introducing the Canada Child Benefit, and delivering $10-a-day daycare. He also guided us through a global pandemic and championed gender parity in leadership roles. He’s not perfect—no leader is. But Justin Trudeau is undeniably a disciplined, patient leader who works hard and reads extensively,” Arya said.
He was also in news after Khalistani separatist-terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun of the Sikhs For Justice group told the Nepean lawmaker to return to India, making discriminatory comments.
“The likes of Arya and his supporters. You have no place in Canada because you are working against Canadian values, you are working against the Charter of Rights and you are promoting the interests of your masters in India. You all must abandon your citizenship and move back to your motherland India,” Pannun said in the video.
