She said, “I have done all kinds of diets, and nothing has worked for me. I did Keto for two weeks, and I had a small intestine infection.”
What Is A Ketogenic Or Keto Diet?
The keto diet is a high-fat, moderate-protein, and very low-carbohydrate eating plan designed to promote the body’s state of ketosis. In ketosis, the body burns fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates. Typically, a keto diet consists of 70-80% fat, 15-25% protein, and less than 50 grams of carbohydrates in a day.
What Are The Disadvantages Of A Keto Diet?
Talking about Mouni’s case, Dr Narender Singla, lead consultant, internal medicine, CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, told Indian Express that keto diets have been linked to changes in the gut microbiome. These changes can lead to an increased risk of small intestine infections. He said, “This happens because drastically reducing carbohydrate intake forces the body to produce ketones as an alternative energy source.”
Here are some of the other disadvantages of a keto diet.
- 1. Nutrient Deficiency: The restrictive nature of the keto diet can lead to deficiencies in important nutrients like fibre, vitamins (such as B vitamins and vitamin C), and minerals (such as potassium, magnesium, and calcium). This is because many foods rich in these nutrients are restricted or eliminated from the diet.
- 2. Digestive Issues: Due to the low fibre intake, people on the keto diet might experience constipation or other digestive issues.
- 3. Difficulty with Sustainability: Many people find the keto diet hard to stick to over the long term due to its restrictive nature. Social gatherings, dining out, or even simple meal prep can become challenging when the focus is on avoiding most carbs.
- 4. Potential for Weight Regain: While many lose weight initially on the keto diet, it can be difficult to maintain the weight loss once carbs are reintroduced.
- 5. Kidney Stones and Liver Issues: For those with pre-existing kidney or liver conditions, the high intake of protein and fat can increase the risk of kidney stones or put a strain on the liver due to the process of metabolizing fat and protein.
While the keto diet has its advantages, it does not necessarily give the same result to every individual. With every diet, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional first rather than blindly following diet trends.
