Mumbai and Madhya Pradesh aren’t going to fight for just another SMAT title. This year would have a special asterisk on it because of how many star players participated and were eliminated to let these two teams come through.
Mumbai lost only to Kerala but thanks to the impeccable form of Ajinkya Rahane and skipper Shreyas Iyer, romped over heavyweights Maharashtra, Vidarbha and Baroda, among others. Every stat — most runs, wickets, best average, et al — has a Mumbaikar somewhere and is a testament to their typical teamwork.
But Madhya Pradesh are as good as it gets in terms of competitors. They have never won the SMAT but are led by the brilliant Rajat Patidar and the IPL 2024-winning coach Chandrakant Pandit, who is among the few men in India who can match Mumbai in sheer match-winnability. MP, too, lost one match from nine, to Rajasthan, and are coming off clinical wins versus Saurashtra and Delhi.
