Comedian Munawar Faruqui recently revealed that his son, Mikael, was diagnosed with a rare disease when he was one and a half years old. Appearing on a podcast with Janice Sequeira, he spoke about his son’s battle with Kawasaki Disease – a rare illness that causes inflammation in the blood vessels throughout the body.
Speaking to Janice Sequeira, Munawar Faruqui recalled how he did not have money for his son’s injections back then as he was struggling financially. He mentioned how each injection cost Rs 25,000 and he had only Rs 700 in his pocket. The comedian said, “That situation scares me. My son was one and a half years old back then. He fell ill, and for 2-3 days, his condition didn’t improve. After taking him to the hospital, we discovered he had Kawasaki disease. Three injections were required, each costing Rs 25,000. I needed Rs 75,000 but had only Rs 700-800 in my wallet.”
What Is Kawasaki Disease?
Kawasaki disease is a rare but serious condition that requires immediate medical attention. The disease primarily affects children, especially those under the age of 5. It causes inflammation in the blood vessels, including those vessels that supply blood to the heart.
What Are The Symptoms Of Kawasaki Disease?
The symptoms typically appear in phases.
- A high fever lasting more than 5 days is the key marker of Kawasaki disease.
- Apart from fever, children can also develop rashes on the chest, stomach, or genital area.
- The eyes are affected and appear red.
- The lymph nodes are swollen, particularly in the neck area.
- Swelling or discomfort in the joints, such as the knees or hips.
- Additionally, children can become fussy and confused during the acute stages.
What Are The Causes Of Kawasaki Disease?
Experts have not fully understood the cause behind the disease. However, studies point out that it might be related to an abnormal immune response, possibly triggered by an infection. Studies also believe a genetic component is also at play.
How Is Kawasaki Disease Diagnosed?
Apart from checking the medical history and looking for physical symptoms, doctors rely on blood tests to check for inflammation and a heart ultrasound.
How Is Kawasaki Disease Treated?
While the disease cannot be cured, it can be treated effectively when diagnosed early. Doctors rely on a combination of Intravenous Immunoglobulin (administration of antibodies to strengthen the immune system), aspirin to deal with the fever, and monitoring of the heart through echocardiograms.
