Myanmar Conflict On Agenda For Talks Between PM Modi, Indonesian President Prabowo Today

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is on his first state visit to India after taking office in October and will attend the 76th Republic Day celebrations as a chief guest

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto are set to hold talks on various regional issues on Saturday, a day before India’s 76th Republic Day in which the latter will participate as a chief guest.

According to the MEA sources, the Myanmar conflict will be a prominent agenda of discussion between the two leaders.

India and Indonesia have been trying to stitch up a dialogue between Myanmar’s ethnic armed organisations and the military junta in Nay Pyi Taw.

The two leaders are expected to discuss several regional issues which include the tension around the South China Sea at the Hyderabad House, the state guesthouse of the Indian prime minister.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto On First State Visit To India

President Prabowo is on his first state visit to India after taking office in October. He is scheduled to attend the Republic Day parade on Sunday as chief guest and also participate in a commemorative event which will mark the 75th anniversary of India-Indonesia diplomatic ties.

“India is our friend and an important partner to Indonesia. India was one of the countries that strongly supported our struggle for independence during the war until 1949,” said the Indonesian president before departing for New Delhi.

After the meeting, the two leaders will visit the Raj Ghat memorial complex in New Delhi to pay homage to Father Of The Nation Mahatma Gandhi.

PM Modi and President Prabowo will also sign various memorandums of understanding (MoUs) on the bilateral co-operation of their countries in health, education, culture and security and maritime safety.

“I will also meet with Indian businesspeople who want to invest in Indonesia. Representatives from the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry [Kadin] will be present during the event,” said Prabowo.

The foreign ministry said that the Indonesian president’s visit to India is “an affirmation of the deepening and widening strategic cooperation between the two countries, especially in the economic, security [and] maritime sectors”.
