The Story Behind Narasimha Jayanti
According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Narasimha to vanquish the tyrannical Hiranyakashipu, who was immune to death by man, animal, or deity—day or night, indoors or outdoors.
Narasimha defied these conditions by striking at dusk, on a threshold, using a form that was neither fully man nor beast. This act serves as a powerful reminder that divine justice prevails, no matter how impossible the odds.
Why Narasimha Jayanti is Celebrated
Narasimha symbolizes fierce protection and divine strength. Devotees celebrate this day to seek his blessings for protection from negativity, and to invite courage, prosperity, and righteousness into their lives.
Puja and Fasting Rituals
Devotees observe a fast starting the previous day, consuming only a single sattvic meal and avoiding grains. On Jayanti day, worship includes taking a Sankalp during Madhyahna and performing a detailed puja before sunset. Many stay awake through the night, completing the Visarjan Puja and offering charity the next morning. The fast is traditionally broken after the Chaturdashi Tithi ends post-sunrise.
