New Japan PM Shigeru Ishiba Cites Russia And China Incursions, Pitches For Expansion of US-Led Quad

Former defence minister Shigeru Ishiba has triumphed in his fifth bid to become Japan’s prime minister, succeeding Fumio Kishida. Ishiba defeated hardline nationalist Sanae Takaichi in one of Japan’s most unpredictable elections in decades with a record nine candidates in the field. Meanwhile, China warned Japan on September 26 that it should be prepared “to pay a heavy price” if it interferes with Beijing’s plans for Taiwan. China said its military was on “high alert” and that it lodged a complaint with Tokyo after a Japanese warship sailed through the Taiwan Strait for the first time.
