Former defence minister Shigeru Ishiba has triumphed in his fifth bid to become Japan’s prime minister, succeeding Fumio Kishida. Ishiba defeated hardline nationalist Sanae Takaichi in one of Japan’s most unpredictable elections in decades with a record nine candidates in the field.
