The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Thursday said Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a US Army veteran who drove a pickup truck into a crowd of New Year’s revelers acted alone. It revealed that the US citizen from Texas posted five videos on his Facebook account in the hours before the attack in which he said that he joined the Islamic State (IS) terror group and swore allegiance to the group.
The investigating agency also said that Jabbar planted two home-made bombs.
“This was an act of terrorism. It was premeditated and an evil act,” said Christopher Raia, the deputy assistant director of the FBI’s counterterrorism division.
It also that the deadly truck-ramming in New Orleans and a vehicle explosion outside a Trump hotel in Las Vegas do not appear to be linked.
“At this point, there is no definitive link between the attack here in New Orleans and the one in Las Vegas,” Raia said at a press conference.
Authorities recovered an Islamic State black flag from the truck, and President Joe Biden revealed that the FBI informed him about Jabbar posting videos on social media hours before the attack. The videos reportedly showed his motivation by the militant group and his expressed intent to kill.
