New York Yankees legend and World Series champion Art Schallock dead at 100

The New York Yankees are mourning the death of former World Series champion pitcher Art Schallock following his death at the age of 100.

From 2022, Schallock had been the oldest Major League Baseball player still alive, and his death was announced by the league on Saturday night.

A statement read: ‘We are saddened to learn of the passing of Art Schallock, who we celebrated last year on his 100th birthday. Mr. Schallock pitched for the Yankees and Orioles from 1951-55. He was MLB’s oldest-living player and would have turned 101 next month.’

Schallock played five seasons in the major leagues and was part of three World Series teams, pitching in the 1953 series against the rival Brooklyn Dodgers.

Following Schallock’s death, the title of oldest living baseball player is passed on to Bill Greason, the former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher who turned 100 in September.

The Yankees also posted a tribute to Schallock on social media, writing: ‘The Yankees mourn the passing of former Yankees pitcher Art Schallock and extend our deepest condolences to Art’s family, friends, and loved ones.

‘Art, who won 3 World Series rings with the Yankees from 1951 to 1953, turned 100 this past April and had been MLB’s oldest living former player.’

During his time as a Yankee, the New York Post report that he roomed with Yogi Berra as a rookie, held Ted Williams hitless in two at-bats, and shared a clubhouse with Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle.

After leaving the Yankees he moved on to the Baltimore Orioles, where he appeared in 58 major league games, including 14 as a starting pitcher.

He and his wife Dona Bernard were married for a remarkable 76 years until her death in April 2023, and the pair had two children and five grandchildren.
