Indian all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy has hailed his Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain Pat Cummins and national bowling coach Morne Morkel for improvement in his bowling skills. Reddy shone the brightest for India on Thursday (July 10) at Lord’s during the third Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, taking out both England openers, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, and ending the first day with figures of 2/46 in 14 overs.
Reddy was given the new ball for the first time in the series as Shubman Gill brought him on for the 14th over when Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj had failed to pick any wickets. Reddy got Duckett stranded down the leg side on the third ball, via a failed attempt to pull. Ollie Pope edged his first ball against him, but Gill dropped it at slips. Two deliveries later, Crawley feathered a peach that swung in and seamed away, behind.
England closed the day at 251/4, with Reddy the only Indian bowler to take more than one scalp.
“After Australia tour (2024-25, where he took five wickets in nine innings), I felt like I have to improve my bowling and my consistency,” Reddy said after the day’s play, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. “That’s what I looked about. And yeah, Pat is my captain, and he’s been brilliant in Australia and I have asked him some tips and he has been telling me how things would’ve been done in Australia, how can I go through in Australia. And that’s a great experience for me, sharing with Pat Cummins,” he added.
In England, his skills were always expected to come in handy, though there was criticism when he was picked in the team instead of an extra specialist bowler.
“Coming to this tour, I would say, working with Morne Morkel has been great for me. He’s working with me for couple of weeks and, we are seeing good progress in my bowling, and I’m really enjoying working with him,” Reddy said.
“We’ve been working on my consistency a lot since I get a bit of swing both ways. I just want to be consistent on the areas. So we are working on that. I’ve been working hard on my bowling for one year or two years. I’ve been doing a lot of hard work, but later on it is about understanding things and believing in myself. If you believe, that’s when your hard work comes on point. That’s what I’m realising now,” he added.
