The pacer was the pick of the lot during retentions, as MI splurged a whopping 18 crore on Bumrah, making him the costliest buy in the history of the franchise.
Talk about paying the big bucks. Mumbai Indians paid Jasprit Bumrah the top retention price of INR 18 Crore on Thursday making him the costliest buy in the history of the franchise, as the ace pacer continues his ‘complete journey’ with MI.
Bumrah was one of the five players — including Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma — retained by the Mumbai franchise, ahead of the new season.
The pacer though was the pick of the lot, as MI splurged a whopping 18 crore on Bumrah, making him the costliest buy in the history of the franchise.
MI Retention List
- Jasprit Bumrah (18 crore)
- Hardik Pandya (16.35 crore)
- Suryakumar Yadav (16.35 crore)
- Rohit Sharma (16.30 crore)
- Tilak Varma (8 crore)
Looking back fondly on his journey at the franchise after being retained, Bumrah said, “It feels good. I came here as a 19-year-old teenager. Now I’m going to turn 31, so it’s been a complete journey. I’m happy that the journey is continuing. There’s no better feeling.”
“I had a lot of belief in my ability. I did not want to be just any cricketer, I wanted to do more. I wanted to do special things.””
Mumbai Indians played under the leadership of Hardik Pandya in IPL 2024 and could only manage to win four out of 14 league stage matches, because of which, with 8 points, they finished at the bottom of the IPL 2024 points table.
So, looking forward to the upcoming season, Bumrah expounded on MI’s gameplan for rebounding back from failure.
“We’ve been successful in the past and we know how to win championships. So, we are now trying to rectify our mistakes and look at the positives as we move on ahead,” exclaimed Bumrah.
After retaining five players from the IPL 2024 squad for Rs 75 crore, five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians will enter the IPL 2025 mega auction with a remaining purse of Rs 45 crore as they aim to rebuild and work their way back up to championship pedigree.
