The nation is celebrating in unison after India defeated New Zealand by 4 wickets to bring home the ICC Champions Trophy after 12 years. People from all walks of life are congratulating the Rohit Sharma-led team for a phenomenal victory over the Kiwis.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella were among the prominent politicians and business leaders who hailed team India’s emphatic victory over New Zealand in a thriller clash in Dubai. The triumph also triggered a wave of memes on social media.
Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer, who often provides hilarious insights and memes related to the sport, also celebrated India’s win over New Zealand and its third Champions Trophy. He compared the occasion with India’s victory in the ODI World Cup in 2011, when the Men In Blue led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni brought the cup home.
“Most of the 2011 WC was in March and also the business end of this CT. Which proves one thing. No one can outperform Indians when it comes to achieving targets in March closing,” he said on X.

The win on Sunday helped India become the most successful team in Champions Trophy history with three titles, and Rohit Sharma became the fifth captain in the world to win multiple ICC trophies. The victory helped ease the pain of the 2023 ODI World Cup, when a dominant Indian team lost to Australia by 6 wickets in the final.
On Sunday, India rode on captain Rohit Sharma’s 76-run knock to chase down the target of 252 runs in 49 overs in what became a tense chase after wickets fell in quick succession. During his stay at the crease, Rohit faced 83 balls and hammered 7 fours and 3 sixes and added 105 runs for the first wicket with Shubman Gill (31 runs).
New Zealand got off to a flying start thanks to Rachin Ravindra’s explosive 37-run knock. However, the spinners pushed the Kiwis on the backfoot, with Varun Chakravarty dismissing Will Young for 15. This was followed by Kuldeep Yadav picking up Rachin and Kane Williamson (11).
Daryl Mitchell (63) and a late cameo by Michael Bracewell (53) powered New Zealand to 251 for 7 at the end of 50 overs. While India began well banking on Rohit Sharma’s flurry of boundaries, the Men in Blue were pushed on the backfoot as three wickets fell in 17 runs.
It was up to Shreyas Iyer (48) and Axar Patel (29) to steer India to stability before KL Rahul (34) and Hardik Pandya (18) took the reins, with Ravindra Jadeja scoring the winning runs with a boundary off William O’Rourke.
This is India’s third ICC Champions Trophy title. India shared the coveted trophy with Sri Lanka in 2002 after the final was washed out, while the team led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni clinched the trophy in 2013.
