Zomato founder and chief executive officer Deepinder Goyal is on the lookout for a Chief of Staff position, he said in a social media post on Wednesday. Goyal shared a detailed job description, laying out some unconventional instructions that state the candidate will not be paid a salary for the first year but will instead have to donate Rs 20 lakhs for charity. “Update: I am looking for a chief of staff for myself,” his tweet read. In the notice, Goyal also specified that the chief of staff is required for the Gurugram headquarters, followed by other ideas on the job description, details and application procedure.
To begin with, the post mentioned that the candidate must be “hungry, have a lot of common sense, empathy, should be down to earth, and have zero entitlement” followed by Grade A communication skills, a learning mindset, and will to do the right thing.

While the job requires the candidate to do “anything and everything” to build the future of Zomato, in return, it will offer 10 times more learning experience and the chance to work closely with Goyal and some of the smartest people in consumer tech.
The most interesting part is the salary details. “There is no salary for this role for the first year. You will have to, in fact, pay Rs 20 lakhs for this opportunity. 100 per cent of this fee will be paid in the form of a donation directly to Feeding India,” it said further adding that Zomato will also contribute Rs 50 lakhs to a charity of the candidate’s choice. Ultimately, the candidate will start receiving the usual salary from the second year, which Goyal specified to be more than 50 lakhs. However, salary discussions will only begin at the start of Year 2.
Explaining the logic behind paying such a huge amount for a job, the notice states that people should take it as a learning opportunity or a fast-track learning programme. Interested ones can simply write a cover letter of 200 words, without the need to send any resume, it mentions at the end.
The unconventional job opportunity has already triggered a mix of praise and criticism from social media users. While some praised the chance to learn directly from a leading entrepreneur, others argued that the high fee can be inaccessible for most of the candidates.
