Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday stoked a row with his comments on the ongoing Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, stating that there is “no such thing like Maha Kumbh” and the name was “coined” to “waste” money and “misguide” people.

Akhilesh, who also took a dip in Triveni Sangam in the holy city, said that the facilities in the Kumbh Mela are “really bad” and demanded an extension of the time of Kumbh.

His remarks came days after RJD chief Lalu Yadav dubbed Maha Kumbh as “meaningless”. Akhilesh’s remarks drew sharp criticism from the BJP which accused him of engaging in “cheap politics to oppose Sanatan Dharma”.

Akhilesh Yadav Vs BJP Over Maha Kumbh

Akhilesh stepped up his attack on the BJP and alleged that the party

“misguided” the people that the historic occasion was taking place after 144 years.

“There is no such thing like ‘Maha-Kumbh’, this name was coined so that the government could waste more money. Only money was to be taken out and wasted on it so word ‘Maha’ was added to Kumbh, they wanted to waste the money, they also misguided the people that it is happening after 144 years,” he said.

“The Chief Minister had said that they are making arrangements for 100 crores of people but that many people haven’t even gone, only a few crores have gone but still, all the facilities have gone down the hill, and stampede happened,” he said.

The former chief minister also said that the actual death toll in the stampede incident in Maha Kumbh has not been released.

“So many people lost lives in various accidents…no government is ready to help them. I demand that the time of Kumbh should be extended,” he said.

BJP Reacts To Akhilesh’s Remark

The BJP lashed out at Akhilesh, alleging that he is making “offensive remarks” while also making “false allegations”.

“The way Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav is doing cheap politics to oppose Sanatan Dharma is extremely objectionable. On one hand, he is making offensive remarks about the grand festival like Mahakumbh, while on the other, he is also busy leveling baseless and false allegations. Akhilesh Yadav should apologize to the people of the country for his insensitive statements,” the Uttar Pradesh BJP posted on X.
