On This Day In 2004: Over two decades ago, Yuvraj Singh produced one of his best knocks in one-day international cricket against a star-studded Australian squad. The legendary all-rounder smashed 139 runs against Ricky Ponting’s men at the Sydney Cricket Ground on January 22. His breathtaking batting display stunned the Australian bowlers and left the 39,000-plus spectators spellbound.

Yuvraj’s century in Sydney had 16 boundaries and two sixes to win the Player of the Match award. But the innings couldn’t save India from defeat as the visitors lost by two wickets via the D/L method.

Yuvraj Singh’s incredible batting display occurred on this day during the seventh fixture of the VB Series 2004. It was a tri-nation series between India, Australia and Zimbabwe. The Men in Blue won the toss and decided to bat first.

They lost Sourav Ganguly, Parthiv Patel and Rahul Dravid early in the match to find themselves at 80/3 in the 16th over. Reading the situation well, Yuvraj stepped up for the visitors to form a formidable partnership with VVS Laxman.

The innings was the perfect example of timing, placement and power. He effortlessly dispatched the ball to different parts of the ground, showcasing his wide range of strokes. VVS Laxman played a supporting role on the other end, adding another 106 runs. He provided a balance to the partnership with a slightly defensive approach. Laxman smashed five boundaries in the 130 deliveries he played.

VVS Laxman and Yuvraj Singh’s 213-run partnership for the fourth wicket provided India with a much-needed platform for a blistering assault against Australia. Yuvraj’s innings was eventually ended by fast-bowling legend Brett Lee, who beat the Indian all-rounder with an absolute peach of delivery. India put up a commanding total of 296/4.

Rain played spoilsport during Australia’s innings. The target had to be reduced to 225 from 34 overs using the D/L method. Adam Gilchrist opened the chase alongside Simon Katich.

The legendary wicketkeeper batter scored a quickfire 95 from 72 deliveries. He smashed 14 fours and one six. Ricky Ponting chipped in with another 42 runs, leading Australia to a narrow two-wicket win.

While Yuvraj Singh’s century failed to seal a victory for India it captivated the imagination of Indian fans. It also established the young all-rounder as one of the most exciting prospects in Indian cricket.
