Former England defender Jamie Carragher has said that he couldn’t believe that Liverpool would get the better of Paris Saint-Germain at the latter’s home ground of Parc des Princes, calling it ‘one of the biggest robberies’ in the history of football.

Liverpool and PSG faced off in a Champions League Round of 16 match in Paris, and against all predictions and odds, the former came out winners.

England midfielder Harvey Elliott scored with his first touch after coming on as a late substitute to give Liverpool an unlikely 1-0 victory over PSG.

“That’s one of the biggest robberies you’ve let us see in football. It is, I mean… I can’t believe what I’ve just seen. I can’t. I mean, PSG were outstanding. Brilliant. Battered Liverpool,” Carragher said while speaking on CBS Sports.

Carragher was elated with the part Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker played to seal the victory over PSG for Liverpool. He made nine saves, with six needing a dive to keep the ball out of the net.

Becker’s brilliant performance saw Liverpool keep a clean sheet, and Carragher was very pleased.

“The last time Liverpool won this competition, Alisson Becker, the goalkeeper, made a save against Napoli in the last group game of the group stage. They could have gone out if Napoli had scored,” Carragher said.

“That wasn’t a save tonight. That was arguably the greatest performance of his career, or certainly in a Liverpool shirt. And if they go on to win this competition… that performance will be remembered for years to come,” Carragher added.

Meanwhile, Elliott had just replaced Mohamed Salah when he fired in from a Darwin Nunez assist in the 87th minute at the Parc des Princes to hand the Premier League leaders the advantage ahead of next week’s return.

It was the ultimate smash and grab act from Arne Slot’s team, who, up to that point, had survived a pummelling from in-form PSG.

Liverpool next play Southampton on Saturday, March 8, in a Premier League fixture at Anfield.
