Dr Manmohan Singh passed away at 92 in Delhi on Thursday evening. Several world leaders and nations have paid tributes to former Prime Minister, including the United States and Russia.
Countries from across the globe have joined in to condole the demise of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Thursday. While the United States called him “one of the greatest champions” of the strategic partnership between India and the US, Russia said that it was a moment of grief for both countries.
Manmohan Singh passed away at 92 at AIIMS Delhi on Thursday evening.
US Pays Tributes
The United States Department of State offered condolences and said that his work during his prime ministership laid the foundation for the developments between the two countries in the last two decades.
“Dr. Singh was one of the greatest champions of the U.S.-India strategic partnership, and his work laid the foundation for much of what our countries have accomplished together in the past two decades. His leadership in advancing the U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement signified a major investment in the potential of the U.S.-India relationship. At home, Dr. Singh will be remembered for his economic reforms that spurred India’s rapid economic growth,” the US said in a statement.
“We mourn Dr. Singh’s passing and will always remember his dedication to bringing the United States and India closer together,” the State Department added.
Russia’s Putin Condoles Demise
President Vladimir Putin offered condolences on the passing away of the former PM and said that he made a “major personal contribution” to strengthening ties between the two countries, the Russian Embassy in India said.
“Manmohan Singh was an outstanding statesman. As Prime Minister, he accomplished a lot in promoting India’s economic development. He also made a major personal contribution to strengthening friendly ties between our two countries. I had the occasion of talking with this remarkable man several times. We will cherish the memory of him,” Putin said.

Russian envoy to India, Denis Alipov, said that Singh’s commitment to India’s progress was unquestionable.
“It is a moment of poignant sorrow and grief for India and for Russia. Dr Manmohan Singh’s contribution to our bilateral ties was immeasurable. His suave demeanour was always endearing as unquestionable was his expertise as an economist and his commitment to the progress of India,” the Russian envoy said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Dr Manmohan Singh ji and the Indian people,” he added.
