Emma Dumont, known for her role as Jackie Oppenheimer in the critically acclaimed 2023 film Oppenheimer, has made a significant announcement about her identity. The actor, who gained further recognition for her portrayal of Lorna Dane/Polaris in the popular series The Gifted, has come out as transmasculine and nonbinary and is now adopting they/them pronouns. The news was first reported on TMZ.
According to Dumont’s representative, the actor will now be referred to with they/them pronouns. While this marks a personal transformation, Dumont will retain the name Emma Dumont for professional purposes, as confirmed by their representative in a statement to TMZ. The actor’s Instagram bio now reflects this change, featuring their new name, Nick, alongside their pronouns.
“They identify as a transmasculine nonbinary person. Their work name is still going to be Emma Dumont, but they will go by Nick with friends and family,” the representative said.
Dumont’s Instagram bio now reflects the message: “Only call me Nick if ur cool okay?”
Earlier this week, Dumont shared an Instagram carousel featuring a bathroom selfie and a photo of them holding a guitar, but the post did not explicitly address the coming out.
For those unfamiliar, transmasculine is a term describing individuals who were assigned female at birth (AFAB) but identify with masculinity. This can include transgender men as well as AFAB nonbinary individuals.
Dumont, who was born Emma Noel Roberts, has an impressive list of acting credits since 2009, with Oppenheimer being one of the most notable recent roles. Interestingly, Dumont’s upcoming film, currently in post-production, is titled New Me, which could serve as a fitting reflection of this transformative period.
Emma Dumont’s coming out is part of a wider trend of public figures sharing their diverse gender identities, with others such as Demi Lovato, Sam Smith, Emma Corrin, Jonathan Van Ness, Cara Delevingne and Elliot Page also leading the way in normalising conversations around gender diversity.
