Pakistani envoy to Bangladesh Syed Ahmed Maroof held a meeting on Tuesday with Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chief Khaleda Zia.

Maroof and Zia – a rival of Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League – met in the city’s Gulshan area at the former Bangladesh prime minister’s residence.

BNP officials Dr AZM Zahid Hossain and Shama Obaed were present, Bangladeshi news outlet UNB said.

According to the Diplomat BNP has historical ties with Pakistan, due to the political strategies of its founder, Ziaur Rahman.

Following the end of the 1971 Liberation War, Zia shifted Bangladesh’s secular foundations and aligned the BNP with Islamic principles and removed restrictions on religious political parties like Jamaat-e-Islami (JI).

This alignment led to a BNP-JI alliance that included pro-Islamic agendas and participation in coalition governments during the 1990s and early 2000s.

These ties fostered closer relations with Pakistan, particularly during periods of strained BNP-India relations.

The BNP in the past has been accused of not paying attention to the plight of Hindu and other minorities when in power.
