Pakistan promoted its army chief, General Asim Munir, to the rank of Field Marshal. This was only the second time in the country’s history that the title was bestowed upon someone. The decision came in the aftermath of heightened tensions and a military standoff with India following the Pahalgam terror attack. The elevation means that military supremacy supersedes civilian governance of Pakistan, Munir gets the authority beyond future army chiefs—possibly even beyond civilian oversight. This would also mean that he has institutional immunity from scrutiny, accountability, or post-retirement prosecution. n18oc_world n18oc_crux
