Pensioner, 70, killed in New Years Eve hit-and-run as two others die amid spate of road tragedies

Police are hunting for a hit-and-run driver who fled the scene of an accident which left a pensioner dead on Hogmanay.

The 70-year-old, who has not been identified, was walking on Barrhead Road, close to the Ladykirk Crescent junction in Paisley at around 7pm, when she was struck by a white car.

But the motorist failed to stop after the incident with the pedestrian pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Officers are now trying to identify and locate the car and establish the full circumstances which led to the crash.

Detective Inspector David Tomlinson said: ‘Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who died and everyone affected by this tragic incident.

‘I would urge anyone who may have witnessed anything or believes they saw, or may have dashcam footage, of a white coloured car on the road prior to the collision to get in touch.

‘We would also be keen to speak to anyone who thinks they have seen a car matching this description after the collision which may have had damage.’

Meanwhile, two other people died in separate crashes on Tuesday.

A 26-year-old Paige Douglas, from Kirkcaldy, Fife, lost her life in a three vehicle pile-up just miles from her home shortly after 1pm.

She had been driving a BMW when it was involved in a crash with a Mercedes Sprinter van and a Ford Focus on Standing Stane Road, near the village of Windygates. Her 22-year-old passenger and the 46-year-old driver of the van were taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee for treatment while a woman 62, and a 63-year-old man from the other car were taken to Victoria Hospital and later released.

Ms Douglas’s sister paid tribute to her on social media and said: ‘Too many people have lost their lives on this road. I can’t even describe the pain, it’s like a living nightmare.

‘We love you Paige and we always will. I am praying others involved recover.’

And at around 7.30pm a 53-year-old man lost his life following a one car crash on the A83 near Tarbert, Argyllshire.

Emergency services were alerted to the scene but were unable to save him and he was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin are aware.

Police have also named the motorbiker who died on the A811 near Stirling on Christmas Day as David Buckley.

The 60-year-old lost his life after a crash involving a grey Moto Guzzi V100 bike and a red Audi A7 at around 2pm.

His heartbroken family issued a statement through police saying: ‘Our Darling Dave will be forever missed and never forgotten. He was a wonderful father, husband, son, brother, uncle and friend to everyone who knew him.

‘We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support from family and friends during this difficult time. In these tragic circumstances, we kindly request privacy.’

Sergeant Fraser Easton said the driver of the Audi, a 72-year-old man, escaped the incident with minor injuries.

He added: ‘Our thoughts remain with family and friends of David at this difficult time, and we will continue to offer them support.

‘Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and I would appeal to anyone who has not already spoken to officers to come forward if they have any information that could assist with our investigation.

‘We are still looking to trace the driver of a white Dacia Duster, which was seen in the area at the time of the crash as we believe they may have information that could assist officers.

‘We are also asking anyone driving in the area at the time to check their dash-cams to see if they have any footage that would help with our enquiries.’
