Among the numerous temples dedicated to Lord Ganesh in India, there exists a unique and enigmatic temple situated atop a high hill amidst dense forests. This temple is known as Dholkal Ganesh Temple.
Located on Dholkal hill in the Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh, approximately 350 km from Raipur, the temple sits at an altitude of 3000 feet above sea level. Here are some intriguing details about this temple.
Local legend holds that a fierce battle took place on this hill long ago between Lord Ganesh and Lord Parshuram. During this combat, Lord Parshuram struck Lord Ganesh with his axe. As a result, the village situated below this hill came to be known as ‘Farsapal. The winner of this battle remains a mystery to this day.
Installation Of The 1000-Year-Old Ganesh Idol
To commemorate this mythological battle, the Chindak Nagavanshi kings installed a stone idol of Lord Ganesh on top of the hill in the 11th century. This idol, shaped like a dholak, is about 2.5 to 3 feet high and depicts Lord Ganesh in his usual, relaxed sitting posture. The locals worship this idol year-round, and a special fair is held here in the month of Magha.
How To Reach Dholkal Ganesh Temple
To visit this temple, you can reach Farsapal village in about 2 hours from Jagdalpur. The route traverses dense forests and hills, so it is advisable to enlist the help of a local guide.
Ensure you carry some food and drink, as you might feel peckish upon reaching the top. The panoramic view of the surrounding forests from the summit is exceptionally beautiful, making your journey even more memorable.
