International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman Jay Shah congratulated the South Africa team for winning the 2025 ICC World Test Championship with a five-wicket victory over Australia, securing their maiden title at Lord’s on Saturday.

Achieving victory just before lunch on the fourth day, South Africa also celebrated their second ICC trophy after the 1998 ICC Champions Trophy. “Congratulations to @ProteasMenCSA on winning the @ICC World Test Championship! And a performance for the ages from @aramco Player of the Match Aiden Markram.”

“The @HomeOfCricket Lord’s was a fantastic venue, and the huge crowds every day once again showed interest in Test cricket!” wrote Shah on his ‘X’ account on Saturday evening.

In the match, South Africa broke a 27-year knockout hoodoo by defeating Australia, the defending champions in this crucial encounter.

Ending day three at 213/2 while chasing 282, South Africa was on the brink of glory. Aiden Markram, who finished day three on 102 not out, went on to score a magnificent 136, leading the Proteas to complete the chase in 83.4 overs, securing the Ultimate Test and marking their eighth consecutive win in the red-ball format.

Markram, after being dismissed for a duck in the first innings, shared a decisive 147-run partnership with skipper Temba Bavuma, who scored 66 despite a left hamstring strain. Although South Africa conceded a 74-run first-innings lead, they successfully completed the chase as batting conditions improved on day three at Lord’s.

Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada also played a crucial role, taking match figures of 9-110, significantly contributing to the championship win. The championship-winning players and support staff will return to South Africa on Wednesday and are expected to hold a press conference upon arriving at OR Tambo International Airport.
