Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren poured his heart out on Tuesday morning in an emotional tribute to his late father, Shibu Soren, the iconic tribal leader and former Chief Minister, who passed away on Monday at the age of 81.

Calling it the most difficult moment of his life, Hemant Soren wrote:

“I am going through the toughest days of my life.

Not only has the shadow of a father been taken from me,

A pillar of Jharkhand’s soul has departed.”

In a deeply personal message, Hemant reflected not only on the personal loss of a father but also on the end of an era in Jharkhand’s political and cultural identity.

“I didn’t just call him ‘Baba,’

He was my guide, the root of my thoughts,

And that forest-like shade

That protected thousands and lakhs of Jharkhandis

From the scorching sun and injustice.”

Shibu Soren, fondly known as ‘Guruji’ or ‘Dishom Guru,’ had long been the face of tribal assertion and rights in Jharkhand. Born in Nemra village, he rose from a life of poverty and personal loss to lead one of India’s most enduring regional movements for tribal empowerment.

Hemant recounted his father’s beginnings — losing his father in childhood, growing up amid hunger and oppression, and turning that struggle into a lifelong mission.

“My Baba’s beginnings were very humble.

Born in that small house in Nemra village,

Where there was poverty, there was hunger, but there was courage.

In his childhood, he lost his father.

The exploitation of the landlords gave him a fire

That made him a fighter for his entire life.”

The former Chief Minister was declared dead at 8:56 am on August 4, after over a month of treatment at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi. The 81-year-old had been battling kidney-related issues and had suffered a stroke in June. He had been on life support since early July.

Confirming the news, Hemant had written on X:

“Respected Guru Dishom has left us all. Today, I have become empty…”

In a press release, the hospital stated that despite best efforts by a multidisciplinary medical team, the veteran leader passed away peacefully with family at his side.

A towering figure in Jharkhand’s identity and its statehood journey, Shibu Soren’s passing marks not just the end of a political life — but the departure of what many regard as the soul of the state itself.
