Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a detailed speech in the Lok Sabha on Saturday listing the steps taken by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to uphold the values of the Constitution and step-by-step examples of how the Congress hurt it over the years.

“One family of the Congress has crushed the Constitution. I mention one family because out of 75 years, only one family was ruling for 55 years. The family’s bad thoughts and policy were carried forward,” said Modi.

“Changing the Constitution became their habit. The Congress got a taste of hunting and did it repeatedly. They attacked the Constitution again and again. It was changed 75 times,” the PM said.

“When the country was completing 50 years of the Constitution, the Emergency was imposed, dissolving Constitutional provisions. Citizens’ rights were snatched away. The Congress can never wash off this taint from its forehead. It had strangled democracy. It was a dark chapter in the history of the nation. People will never forgive them,” he said.

The Lok Sabha on Friday initiated a two-day debate on ‘Discussion on the Glorious Journey of 75 Years of the Constitution of India’ to commemorate the beginning of the 75th year of its adoption.

A look at top quotes from the speech:

  • India’s Constitution has brought us so ahead, negating all negative possibilities cited at the time of Independence. The citizens are worthy of congratulations for passing the test. India is now known as the mother of democracy. We gave birth to democracy. India is the mother of democracy in the world.
  • The number of women members of Parliament and in the council of ministers is rising. In sports, education to every field, women’s representation has been exemplary. Every Indian has acknowledged women’s role in space technology. Women are at the centre of development. The Constitution is the basis of this.
  • After Independence, because of selfish interests, the most vicious attack was on the country’s unity. Instead of celebrating the diversity, the people who were raised with the mindset of slavery, searched for differences in our diversity. They sowed the seeds of hatred to hurt the country’s unity. We need to celebrate diversity.
  • When the country was completing 50 years of the Constitution, the Emergency was brought in, dissolving the Constitutional provisions. Citizens’ rights were snatched away. The Congress can never wash off this taint from its forehead. It had strangled democracy. It was a dark chapter in the history of the nation. People will never forgive them.
  • When we completed 50 years, the Vajpayee government celebrated 50 years of the Constitution. During my tenure as the CM, we had taken out a Gaurav Rath Yatra of the Constitution on an elephant, while the CM was walking along. When we decided we wanted to celebrate November 26 as Constitution Day, an opposition member asked why is there a need for a new date when there is January 26.
  • There was one Congress president who came from backward community…Sitaram Kesari ji. They locked him in the bathrooom. He was thrown on the footpath. One family usurped the whole party.
  • We ran the government for 13 days under the spirit of the Constitution, Atalji did not choose politics of adjustment. In 1998, we had NDA government running, but efforts were made to make the government unstable. We could have bought MPs then, but Atalji chose to lose by one vote rather than go for unconstitutional means…Currency wads were put on parliament floor, votes were bought, sin was done.
  • We also amended the Constitution, but for the nation’s unity and better future, so that OBC commission could be formed. There was a big chunk of people who could prosper due to poverty, so we amended the Constitution and implemented 10% reservation for general category. We did it for women’s reservation bill, for their empowerment. An MP who tore the women’s reservation bill in the past is now Opposition’s margdarshak. We abrogated Article 370 on danke ki chot, the SC upheld it. We brought the CAA.
  • We amended the Constitution to amend old mistakes and time will tell if we did it right or not.
  • The biggest jumla of four generations of a family was ‘garibi hatao’. We gave people toilets, bank accounts, loans, DBT. Do not mock free ration scheme, it is to protect them from becoming poor again. Jinko koi nahi poochhta, unko Modi pujta hai…We got a common sign language for the disabled…We gave schemes for Vishwakarma and transgenders. The Ujjwala scheme gave women respite from smoke. We worked for small farmers, cooperatives, fisherfolk and advisasis…True secularism is in saturation of government schemes for all.
  • This country should get capable leaders. Dynastic politics has hurt this nation a lot. With dynastic politics, their family is always their main priority. Every party should encourage fresh blood in politics.
  • I give the nation 11 sankalps — Do your duty; sabka saath sabka vikas; zero tolerance for corruption; feeling of pride in following rules and law; freedom from colonial mindset; freedom from dynastic politics; respect the Constitution, don’t use it for political gain; don’t take away reservation and stop religion-based reservation; making India an example of women-led development; state to country’s vikas; and Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.
