Operation Sindoor was launched early May 7 to destroy nine terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people lost their lives. All subsequent retaliations to Pakistani offensives were carried out under this operation.
The Narendra Modi-led government has since asserted that India has drawn a “new red line” against terrorism and that Operation Sindoor has set a “new normal” in India’s response to terrorism, including cross-border terrorism.
Hours after the strikes on May 7, the Prime Minister held a meeting to brief his cabinet colleagues about India’s Pahalgam revenge and retaliatory strikes against terror camps in Pakistan and PoK under Operation Sindoor. He had said it was a “moment of pride for all of us”.
In the first Cabinet Committee of Security (CCS) after the Pahalgam attack, the Narendra Modi government decided to hold the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance and also announced the immediate closure of the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Attari for all cross-border movements involving Pakistani nationals. Several other measures like cutting all cross-border trade and restrictions on Pakistani flights were announced in the wake of the deadly attack.
Following the successful strikes, the government sent seven all-party delegations to different parts of the globe to brief nations on India’s stance on Operation Sindoor and terrorism.
Last week, PM Modi said proxy wars by terrorists will not work and bullets will be answered with cannon balls, adding that ‘sindoor’ has become a symbol of valour following India’s response to the Pahalgam terror attack. He also described Operation Sindoor as the biggest and most successful anti-terror operation in the country’s history.
