PM Modi says India stood firm despite nuclear threats from Pakistan during Op Sindoor and said he told US VP Vance that any Pakistani misadventure would be met with deadly force.

PM Modi in Lok Sabha: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday revealed that US Vice President JD Vance had tried reaching him on the night of May 9, shortly after India launched retaliatory strikes under Operation Sindoor to avenge the Pahalgam attack. PM Modi said he was in a meeting with military officials at the time and returned the call later.

“When I spoke to the US Vice President, he warned me that Pakistan may be preparing for a major attack,” Modi said in the Lok Sabha. “I told him clearly: If that’s their plan, they will pay dearly. Goli ka jawab gole se diya jayega”.

The Prime Minister said he made it clear that India would not be deterred. “I conveyed to the US that any misadventure by Pakistan would invite an even stronger response,” he said, adding that Pakistan now knows India is willing and capable of going further if needed.

His remarks came shortly after Leader of Opposition and Congress MP from Kerala Rahul Gandhi accused the government of lacking the political will to fully back the armed forces and claimed that key operational details had been shared with Pakistan during the initial phase of Operation Sindoor.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s statement revealed that the Indian DGMO contacted Pakistan minutes after the strikes began, informing them that only non-military targets had been hit and that India did not seek escalation. “These are not my words,” he said. “These are the words of India’s defence minister.”

Gandhi alleged that the political leadership had restricted the military’s operational scope. “You attacked Pakistan and simultaneously told them we are not going to hit your army or air defence systems. That is not freedom of manoeuvre; that is surrender,” he said. He also claimed that Indian aircraft losses were the result of these imposed constraints.

PM Modi, responding to this narrative, dismissed suggestions that India had come under international pressure to halt its strikes. “No global leader told us to stop,” he said. “The operation is still on. India’s forces are acting with full confidence. Pakistan’s nuclear threats don’t work anymore.”

Prime Minister Modi said that India’s strikes under Operation Sindoor were so effective that Pakistan was forced to call for a ceasefire. “Our missiles attacked Pakistan in a way they could not even imagine. We brought them to their knees,” he told the Lok Sabha. “Pakistan then called our DGMO and requested to stop, saying ‘bahut maara, ab zyada maar jhelne ki takat nahi hai, please hamla rok do’.”

The Prime Minister’s remarks came amid Opposition questions over US President Donald Trump’s claim that he brokered a ceasefire by using trade deals as a key tool.

He said India had decisively exposed Pakistan’s vulnerabilities. “Terrorist launchpads were destroyed. Sites like Bahawalpur and Muridke, where no one imagined we could strike, have been hit hard. Pakistan’s airbases and assets have suffered major damage. Many of their installations are still in ICU,” the Prime Minister said.

Highlighting India’s defence preparedness, Modi said the strikes showcased the country’s growing technological capabilities. “From drones to missiles, our entire operation was powered by Made-in-India systems. The world is witnessing the strength of a self-reliant India,” he said.

He also warned that Pakistan would face consequences for any further provocations. “Operation Sindoor is not over. It will continue for as long as necessary. India will decide the terms and on its own timeline and on its own terms,” Modi said.

Without naming the Congress directly, he took a swipe at the Opposition for questioning the mission. “At a time when our forces are engaged in a battle of resolve, some are playing politics. Today’s warfare includes narratives and information. Weakening the morale of our troops through misinformation helps the enemy,” he said.
