Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat will arrive in Kolkata on Thursday for a 10-day visit — the longest duration he has ever spent in the state at a stretch.
For the first half of his stay, Bhagwat will be in Kolkata up to February 11. On February 11 and 12, he will attend a meeting of the Akhil Bhartiya Toli. The next day, he will visit ‘Madhya Bango’ [middle Bengal] and on February 14, he will inaugurate a new office of the Sangh. Bhagwat will then attend a meeting of ‘Madhya Bango’ workers on February 16.
In Kolkata, the RSS chief will meet people from the Sangh as well as its affiliated organisations. According to a senior Pracharak, Bhagwat’s stay is significant as “there has been a huge demographic change in the region. Bengal needs many changes. It’s important that the RSS chief meets members at all levels at this juncture”.
An RSS leader said: “Bhagwat will visit several districts, including Burdwan, where he is expected to hold his only public rally on February 16. He will also meet regional RSS leaders, local activists, and prominent figures from Burdwan and surrounding areas. These engagements are expected to focus on organisational growth, community outreach, and strengthening ties between RSS leadership and local stakeholders.”
According to RSS General Secretary Jishnu Basu, Bhagwat will arrive in the state from Kerala. Basu emphasised that Bhagwat’s visit is aimed at bolstering the spirit of nationalism within the Hindu community, promoting ‘Swadeshi’ consciousness, and furthering the vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat,’ which is a key national goal.
After the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the RSS’ relationship with BJP has been a matter of discussion. In Maharashtra, the Sangh played a crucial role in ensuring the saffron party’s win and, in this context, Bhagwat’s visit to Bengal becomes significant.
Polls in Bengal are due next year and experts believe that like in the 2019 elections, the Sangh can once again play a crucial role in wooing voters and pushing them towards BJP.
