Sporting CP youngster Geovany Quenda has broken a club record previously held by five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo. Quenda first caught the eye of former manager Ruben Amorim, who recognised his talent and handed him his debut at the Portuguese club. Now, at just 17 years and eight months, the winger became the youngest player in Sporting CP’s history to feature in the Lisbon derby, on December 30. Ronaldo held the previous record for over two decades, appearing in the derby against Benfica in December 2002. The legendary forward was 17 years and 10 months old at the time.

Geovany Quenda put up a stellar show in the Lisbon derby. He was exceptional on Sunday, making a significant impact in the high-stakes clash. Showcasing his talent, the Portugal wonderkid helped his side win the match 1-0 at the Estadio Jose Alvalade. Geny Catamo scored the only goal in the game for Sporting CP in the 29th minute of the fixture.

In August last year, Geovany Quenda became the youngest player in Sporting CP’s history to score a league goal. He found the net during his team’s 3-4 loss to FC Porto. He was 17 years and 95 days old then. Quenda has been a revelation for the Sporting CP in the ongoing 2024/25 campaign. He has featured in all of Sporting CP’s 16 league matches this season, registering two goals and three assists across 27 games.

While his current contract with the Portuguese giants runs till 2027, he could soon see himself pursuing a new challenge elsewhere. His individual prowess has drawn the interest of several top European sides, especially Manchester United. Red Devils head coach Ruben Amorim is now, reportedly, eyeing a reunion with the young winger in England.

Quenda will likely return to action on January 3 for Sporting CP when they take on Vitoria SC in another important league clash at the Estadio Dom Afonso Henriques.

As for Cristiano Ronaldo, it was recently reported by MARCA that the Portuguese icon was open to leaving the Saudi Pro League once his contract expires. The same report, however, also stated that Ronaldo would not prefer to leave until he won the league in Saudi Arabia. This means fans will likely see the Portuguese forward competing under Al Nassr’s banner for a while.

Cristiano Ronaldo will return to action when Al Nassr face Al Akhdoud on January 9.
