Liverpool will head into Christmas at the top of the Premier League table as they registered a 5-2 win over Tottenham on Sunday to extend their lead in the English top flight.

Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah netted a brace each, while Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai struck added to the scoresheet as Liverpool hit six past Tottenham, who had their goals come from James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke.

Arne Slot started Alisson in goal behind the back-four of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Virgil Van Dijk and Andy Robertson. Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Szoboszlai were in midfield with Salah, Cody Gakpo and Diaz deployed as forwards.

Ange Postecoglou fielded Fraser Forster in between the sticks while Pedro Porro, Radu Dragusin, Archie Gray and Djed Spence formed the defence. Pape Sarr and Yves Bissouma were used in holding roles while Kulusevski, Maddison and Hueng-Min Son were handed advanced roles while Dominic Solanke started up front.

The Reds went ahead in the 21st minute of the game as Alexander-Arnold swung in an inch-perfect cross into the danger area as Diaz pounced on the delivery with a header powered into the net to help Slot’s men take the initiative.

Mac Allister doubled Liverpool’s lead in the 35th minute as he headed past Forster to put the Merseyside club firmly in control of the game and primed to take all points on offer.

Maddison cut the deficit in half in the 40th minute of the game as he put the ball into the back of the net from outside the area as Kulusevski’s good work led to Mac Allister being dispossessed in his own half.

Liverpool, however, restored their two-goal cushion before the halftime break as Salah set Szoboszlai up to score his side’s third with a strike through Forster’s legs.

Slot’s men piled further misery on Spurs as they hit swiftly on the counter in the 54th minute as Salah put the finishing touches on his team’s fourth of the night.

Salah added another to his tally to make it 14 goals this season to inch ahead of Manchester City striker Erlink Haaland in the goal-scorers ranking for the ongoing campaign.

Kulusevski got his name on the scoresheet with a half-volley into the net to make the score 2-5 in a game that exposed Spurs’s defensive frailties yet again.

Diaz completed his brace in the 85th minute as Liverpool slotted six past hosts Tottenham in a high-scoring contest that witnessed nine goals being scored in all.
