Alexander Isak netted the lone strike of the game in the 12th minute as he headed a brilliant cross from Anthony Gordon past David Raya to give the Magpies all points on offer.
Newcastle posted a 1-0 win over Arsenal at St. James’ Park on Saturday to damage the London club’s pursuit to chomp down on the gap at the top of the table.
Alexander Isak netted the lone strike of the game in the 12th minute as he headed a brilliant cross from Anthony Gordon past David Raya to give the Magpies all points on offer.
Mikel Arteta fielded David Raya in goal, while Jurrien Timber, William Saliba, Gabriel and Thomas Partey formed the defensive quartet. Declan Rice and Mikel Merino began in the centre of the park with Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka on either flank. Leandro Trossard and Kai Havertz were up in attack.
Eddie Howe set his men up in a 4-3-3 with Nick Pope guarding the goal, behind Tino Livramento, Fabian Schar, Dan Burn and Lewis Hall in defence. Sean Longstaff, Bruno Guimaraes and Joe Willock formed the midfield, while Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak and Joelington started upfront.
Arsenal began the game with intent as they pushed for the opener in the initial knocking of the game, but it was the hosts who got their noses in front in the 12th minute thanks to Isak’s header following a delightful cross into the box from Gordon.
Saka had an opportunity to pull the Gunners back on level terms minutes later, but couldn’t keep his header at the far post on target under pressure.
Newcastle were lucky to get away with one around the half-hour mark as they got enough men between Merino’s shot from inside the box following a corner and the net as the Spaniard’s attempt was blocked by Hall.
The second half was off to a brisk start as Newcastle pushed up the field as Willock tried to put the ball into the net for the Magpies’ insurance goal, however, couldn’t get it past a charging Raya, who held onto it to thwart any danger.
Willock was given another sight of goal around the hour mark as he looked to step away from his marker before opting for a left-footed shot, but his attempt was off target thanks to some good pressure from Gabriel.
Isak looked to double his side’s lead with a shot from range shortly after, but Raya kept the ball out at full stretch to keep the visiting Gunners in the game.
Despite the Londoners’ late flurry of attacking moves into the area, the Magpies held on to their slender lead to grab all points on offer and dent Arsenal’s title challenge.
