Following the catastrophic wildfires that ravaged Los Angeles this week, prompting widespread evacuations, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle issued a joint statement on their official website on January 9. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex expressed their condolences and urged the public to support the victims. They also provided links to resources and foundations to encourage donations and assistance for those affected by the tragedy.

“In the last few days, wildfires in Southern California have raged through neighbourhoods and devastated families, homes, schools, medical care centres, and so much more – affecting tens of thousands from all walks of life,” the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said at the beginning of their statement. The British royals might also be asked to vacuate their lavish Montecito mansion, which is located just miles away from the devastating fires. The couple, along with their children Archie and Lilibet, has resided in the place ever since they retired from their royal duties.

Further, in their note, the Sussexes noted that a “state of emergency has been issued,” adding, “If you feel compelled to help, here are some resources and ideas.” In their statement, they have provided a long list of organisations which are actively providing help to those who are in need during this devastating time. The list included organisations like Jose Andres’ World Central Kitchen, which has been a longtime partner with Prince Harry and Meghan’s charity, the Archewell Foundation.

They shared that CAL FIRE and the LA Fire Department Foundation have been working closely for the firefighters who have been tirelessly showing up at the high-risk areas. While the Animal Wellness Foundation continues to house the evacuated animals, Airbnb and 211L are providing free, temporary housing for those who were displaced. Meanwhile, Baby2Baby is providing essential baby supplies to families in need.

As they concluded their statement, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex urged people to open their homes to people in need. “If a friend, loved one, or pet has to evacuate and you are able to offer them a safe haven in your home, please do,” further requesting people to check if any disabled or elderly person needs to be evacuated. The British royals also asked the privileged people to “give” back in other ways, like donating clothes, toys for the children and other essential items.

The LA wildfires broke out on January 7 and have forced around 2 lakh people to evacuate.
