Krafton launched BGMI after PUBG was banned by the Indian government and now the company is facing big charges around its data policies.
Krafton faces charges for leaking user data on Telegram as per the police report
PUBG and BGMI creator Krafton is in hot soup this week after the developer was accused of leaking user data and selling them on messaging platform Telegram. The company faces these charges after a First Information Report or FIR was filed by a resident from Maharashtra earlier this month.
BGMI is the PUBG Mobile version for the Indian market that Krafton has developed from scratch to bypass the stringent ban from the Indian government. The new FIR accuses Krafton of exposing its user data and selling them for peanuts.
BGMI Data Leak Issue: What The FIR Says
The FIR filed in Maharashtra names the senior Krafton executives: WooYol Lim, Jitendra Bansal, Yoonal Soni, and Wooyol Shalom. The report claims the company has sold the data at Rs 2,000 for each user and that too without taking their consent or informing them about these practices.
The FIR applicant Santosh Torane says these charges clearly are in violation of its service agreement. He has been battling these issues for a few years and earlier his case was not heard. But now, the Bombay High Court will take the case forward and the next hearing is going to be on April 15, 2025.
Krafton Denies Leak Charges
The game developer has lashed out at the charges and said, “At KRAFTON, the protection of personal data is of utmost importance to us, and we are committed to upholding the highest standards of data security. As the matter is currently sub judice, we believe it is best to wait for the legal process to conclude, after which we will provide any necessary clarifications.”
This isn’t the first time Telegram is part of a case indulging in data leak tasks. The platform has been used to share pirated content thanks to the high file size support, which allows people to send movie or video files with other users. BGMI is already facing questions about complying with local rules and cases like these will bring Krafton into the attention of the authorities.
