Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders suffered a shocking batting collapse on Tuesday (April 15) to lose the IPL 2025 match by 16 runs against Punjab Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. The defending champions were cruising at 62 for 2 at one point but then lost the next eight batters for just 33 runs.

For the hosts, Yuzvendra Chahal picked up four wickets for 28 runs in four overs, and three KKR batters were sent back to the dugout by Marco Jansen. The South African pacer clean bowled Andre Russell (17) on the first ball of the 16th over of the run chase to seal a memorable win for the Shreyas Iyer-led side.

Earlier, after opting to bat first, Punjab Kings made a superb start thanks to openers Priyansh Arya (22) and Prabhsimran Singh (30), but Harshit Rana turned the game in KKR’s favour by dismissing Arya and Shreyas Iyer (0 from 2 balls) in the fourth over. Both the batters were caught by Ramandeep Singh in an attempt to play a big shot.

In the next over, star spinner Varun Chakaravarthy clean bowled Australian wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis for two runs on his IPL debut, and on the last ball of the sixth over, Harshit ended Prabh’s innings. Like Arya and Iyer, he was also caught by Ramandeep.

From 54 for 4 at the end of six overs, PBKS were reduced to 86 for 8 in 11 overs. Shashank Singh (18) then joined hands with Australian seamer Xavier Bartlett (11) to take the team’s total past the 100-run mark, which at one point looked unlikely. Shashank was sent back to the pavilion by Vaibhav Arora on the first ball of the 16th over, and on the third ball, Bartlett was run out, which brought an end to PBKS’ innings.

For the visitors, Rana finished with figures of 3 for 25 in three overs, and two Punjab batters were each sent back to the pavilion by Narine (2/14 in three overs) and Chakaravarthy (2/21 in four overs).

The defeat on Tuesday was PBKS’ second loss in a row. In the last match played against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday (April 12), PBKS went down by 8 wickets at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, whereas KKR, for the first time, managed to win two matches in a row.
