If you fast during Ramadan but enjoy a variety of dishes, it is essential to take special care of your diet. Many people consume certain foods during Sehri that can cause discomfort throughout the day.

Fried and spicy foods should be avoided, as well as tea and coffee, as these food items can lead to acidity during fasting. Sugar should also be limited, as it can spike blood sugar levels and cause dehydration. Soda, packaged juices, and processed foods should also be avoided to prevent discomfort during the day.

Speaking to Local18, Dr Siraj Siddiqui, an Ayurvedic doctor from Dehradun, explained what food items to avoid during Sehri.

Foods to Avoid During Sehri

Dr Siddiqui explains that during Ramadan, neither food nor water is consumed throughout the day, which weakens metabolism. It is best to avoid foods high in salt, as salt absorbs water from the body, increasing the risk of dehydration. Processed foods, salty snacks, chips, and spicy items should also be avoided.

Foods That Increase Thirst

Dr Siddiqui further noted that consuming excessive salt, chilli, and oily foods during Sehri can lead to increased thirst throughout the day. Fried and oily foods take longer to digest, which may cause digestive discomfort.

Tea and coffee should also be avoided due to their caffeine content, which can lead to dehydration. Red meat, eggs, and fish should also be limited. If consuming eggs, it is advisable to eat only the white part and avoid the yolk.

Eating Mindfully During Iftar

Dr Siddiqui emphasises the importance of mindful eating during Iftar, as the stomach cannot digest everything immediately after fasting all day. It is recommended to start with fibre-rich foods like salads and fruits, followed by protein sources such as chickpeas and yoghurt. Only after this should you consume main meals like roti or rice.
