The Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, renowned for its tigers and leopards, is attracting rare bird species due to its rich biodiversity and favourable climate. This forest, globally recognised for its increasing tiger population, now hosts many rare bird species seldom seen elsewhere. Over 350 bird species have been recorded in Pilibhit. However, a young bird enthusiast from Pilibhit has discovered a species previously undocumented in Uttar Pradesh.

Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, home to tigers and other wildlife, also boasts over 350 species of birds and butterflies. Bird enthusiast Akhtar Mian Khan recently spotted and photographed the Little Pied Flycatcher in the Pilibhit forest. Akhtar, who has been documenting bird species in the region for a long time, has identified more than 350 birds in Pilibhit’s forests.

First Time in Uttar Pradesh

Speaking to Local 18, Akhtar shared that the Little Pied Flycatcher, typically found in the subtropical or tropical moist forests of the Himalayas and South-East Asia, preys on flying insects. This bird, not commonly found in Uttar Pradesh, was spotted for the first time in February this year near the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, marking a significant moment for the region’s biodiversity. The bird was observed near a homestay on the edge of the reserve’s buffer zone.

Akhtar noted that the Little Pied Flycatcher, a Himalayan bird usually found in South-East Asia, had never been sighted in any forest of Uttar Pradesh until now. However, it has been recorded in states such as Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh.

Providing further insights, Manish Singh, Deputy Director of the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, stated that the presence of the Little Pied Flycatcher in Pilibhit is a positive indicator of the region’s thriving biodiversity and favourable environmental conditions.
