Afghanistan legspinner Rashid Khan has etched his name in T20 history by becoming the format’s most prolific wicket-taker. On Tuesday, during a SA20 Qualifier 1 match between MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals, when Rashid cleaned up Dunith Wellalage, he took his wicket tally to 632 in T20s – one better than West Indies legend Dwayne Bravo who retired in September 2024.

“It’s a great achievement,” Rashid told the broadcaster. “I never thought about it, if you asked 10 years before this if I would get there. It’s a proud feeling to be from Afghanistan and to be at that level where you top the table. DJ (Bravo) is one of the best T20 bowlers. It’s a great honour and I’m looking forward to continuing.”

Rashid, who also captains MI Cape Town in SA20, would later dismiss Paarl Royals wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik and finish with bowling figures of 2/33 from four overs as his team went on to win the contest by 39 runs and enter the title clash.

Rashid is among the most sought after T20 cricketers in leagues across the world including IPL, BBL, CPL, SA20, The Hundred, ILT20, MLC among others. He achieved the milestone in his 461st T20 game while Bravo’s 631 scalps came in 582 matches.

Rashid, who represents Afghanistan in international cricket, made his T20 debut at the age of just 17 years during a T20I against Zimbabwe in 2015. Since then, he has risen to become one of the format’s finest bowlers, bamboozling batters from across the world.

He’s no mug with the bat either and is capable of sending the ball out of the park.

The 26-year-old has won IPL, PSL and will aim to add an SA20 title to his glowing resume when he leads MI Cape Town in the title clash later this week.

Rashid currently represents Gujarat Titans in the IPL having been retained by the former champions for a whopping Rs 15 crore last year.
