Real Madrid have reportedly identified Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot as their alternative to Trent Alexander-Arnold with the 15-time Champions League winners looking to bolster their right-back options in the summer.
According to Relevo, the Portuguese international is an option but will be difficult considering that he signed a new deal in May 2023, with four years remaining on his contract. The report suggests that Los Blancos would have to shell out at least £41 million for the Red Devils to even consider selling him.
But the sale would be difficult as Dalot is proving to be a key member under the newly-appointed manager, Ruben Amorim. Even under the previous manager, Erik Ten Hag, Dalot has been used in both full-back positions, showcasing his versatility. He was also voted as the Players’ Player of the Year following his immense showing in the 2023-24 season.
Real Madrid could stand to benefit from signing Alexander-Arnold with his contract expiring at the end of the summer. This means that the player and his management are free to talk to other clubs and possibly sign a pre-contract agreement ahead of the new season.
Trent has been arguably one of the best right-backs in the Premier League in the modern era with 84 assists and 23 goals from right-back in 326 appearances for Liverpool.
Madrid have also been suffering an injury crisis on their back line with both their designated right-backs, Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez being out of action due to injury. This has likely pushed the club to look for reinforcements in the transfer market after a disastrous start to the 2024-25 campaign.
Nonetheless, Madrid seems to be clawing their way back into the fold as they are now one point away from the league leaders, FC Barcelona with a game in hand. But when it comes to the Champions League, they have not been performing as per expectations, having lost to Liverpool, Milan and Lille in the five games they have played so far.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side will be desperate to turn things around, keep their winning momentum going and look ahead to the new season with fresh additions to the squad.
