Reddit is bringing its AI-powered tools to the Indian market.
Reddit is adding more features to its automatic translation system. In September 2024, the social media platform that resembles a discussion forum unveiled a machine learning (ML) feature that automatically converts posts and comments to the language of the user. The feature was available in 35 countries and several languages at the time.
Reddit is starting with support for posts and comments in Hindi to its list of features. Bengali will soon be able to access the AI features.
How AI Translations Work In Reddit
The company said it has added support for Hindi in an update to its blog post that initially revealed the ML-powered localisation and translation capability. “One of India’s most spoken languages,” according to Reddit, is Hindi. Support for Bengali would shortly follow, it was also confirmed.
In more than 35 countries, Reddit users can now view posts and comments in the language of their choice by selecting the translate icon in the overflow menu located in the upper right corner of the website or mobile app. A user’s whole Reddit feed is automatically translated into the selected language via this option.
Users have the option to create new posts and leave comments in their local language in addition to reading posts and comments in the language of their choice. These comments and posts are automatically translated into the native language of the Subreddit (or community) when the machine learning feature is enabled. Furthermore, a banner is placed to inform other users that the tool was used to translate the post.
According to the company, it is also improving its search engine to ensure that customers can access pertinent content even when they use their favourite language to do searches. Nevertheless, the company’s Answers chatbot is currently limited to supporting English.
Reddit launched its AI chatbot in India last week. The tool, which is still in testing, can respond to questions and summarise and synthesise previous posts and comments from all Reddit communities.
Only the platform’s discussions are included in the chatbot’s knowledge base, and users can search for information, viewpoints, and suggestions by posing natural language queries.
