Regent Street is closed as police carry out controlled explosions after reports of ‘suspicious vehicle’

Regent Street in London has been closed after police were called to ‘investigate a suspicious vehicle’.

Metropolitan Police officers swarmed the major shopping street this afternoon to investigate a ‘suspicious vehicle’. 

The area was cordoned off to the public by the Met as they carried out a number of controlled explosions as a ‘precautionary measure ‘. 

Nearby shops and office buildings were also evacuated. 

A video posted on to social media showed the street, which is normally filled with shoppers, completely deserted, whilst numerous alarms can be heard going off in the area.

The footage was posted along with a caption that read: ‘I’m still in the office on Regent Street. Very eerie. Heard at least one explosion.’ 

Another clip posted onto X, formally known as Twitter, showed a number of shocked shoppers standing behind a police cordon whilst officers investigated the situation.   

The force confirmed it had closed Regent Street and New Burlington Street while officers investigated the vehicle. 

A spokesperson for The Met said: ‘Road closures are in place in the vicinity of Regent Street and New Burlington Street while officers investigate a suspicious vehicle.

‘Officers have carried out a number of controlled explosions as a precautionary measure. 

‘This incident has now been fully stood down. The vehicle was found to be non-suspicious.’
