People across the nation come together to celebrate the values that bind the country. As India prepares to mark its 76th Republic Day this year, it is essential to understand the significance of this day for the common Indian. The answer can be found in its rich history.
India gained independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, but it did not have its own permanent Constitution at that time. For the first three years, the country was still governed under the colonial Government of India Act of 1935.
To address this, a Constituent Assembly was formed with the task of drafting the Constitution which was headed by Dr B.R. Ambedkar.
This committee played a major role in shaping the Constitution working through more than 7,600 amendments and eliminating around 2,400. After many discussions and debates, the final draft of the Constitution was approved on November 26, 1949, but it came into effect on January 26, 1950.
This date was chosen deliberately because of its connection to India’s history. On January 26, 1930, the Indian National Congress had declared this day as “Purna Swaraj” or complete independence from British rule.
On January 26, 1950, India became a republic with the adoption of its Constitution. This document promotes unity across the nation while celebrating India’s diversity. It ensures equal rights and freedoms for all, allowing people of different religions to live together in harmony.
The Constitution creates a sense of belonging for everyone which makes them feel connected as Indian citizens regardless of their faith.
Each year, the Republic Day celebrations are marked by a grand parade in New Delhi. The President of India leads the event by unfurling the national flag at Kartavya Path and this is followed by a spectacular showcase of India’s military strength.

Along with the military display, states and government departments present colourful tableaux that present the unique culture and traditions of various regions. This parade reflects the unity that ties together the country’s diverse communities.
While the grand parade in the capital is the main event, Republic Day is celebrated across the entire country.
Schools, government offices and public spaces hold flag-unfurling ceremonies and organise cultural programmes to mark the occasion. It is a day that reminds citizens of their role in democracy and the need to follow the Constitution’s principles.
