India vice-captain Shubman Gill has said that the current Indian batting line-up with ‘all-time greats’ like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma is the ‘best’ set-up he has been part of. He said skipper Rohit is ‘one of the best openers’ in the world while the rest of the line-up was full of quality, which gave the team immense depth.
India’s batting has been consistently firing since 2022, which has helped the team reach the finals of consecutive ICC tournaments — the 2023 World Cup and the ongoing 2025 Champions Trophy. India are the only team to win all their matches in the Champions Trophy, having beaten Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand in the group stage before edging over Australia in the semi-final.
“This is the best Indian batting lineup I have been part of,” Gill said ahead of Sunday’s final against New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. “All-time greats Virat bhai and Rohit bhai. Rohit bhai is one of the best openers, and Virat, we need not talk about him. There’s so much depth in our batting. Everyone, KL, Hardik, Shreyas — everyone.”
Speaking about his development, Gill said he has learned a lot in recent months and is now trying to help his teammates too.
“I have learned a lot. There is an added responsibility. There are a lot of young players. My role is to talk to young bowlers under pressure, and understand whether they are following the plans. We are motivating each other, and trying to push each other. If there is pressure on someone, we see how we can help him. This is as important as taking a five-for or scoring a hundred,” Gill said.
The summit clash will be played on the same track as the India-Pakistan game in the group stage, where India batted second and won by six wickets with over seven overs to spare.
“Obviously, the kind of wicket that we will play on would be the discussion. We have not seen a 300-plus total here. The wickets that we are playing on are quite different from the wickets that were being used in Pakistan,” Gill said about the pitch.
