Rohit Sharma was the captain of the Indian men’s cricket team that defeated South Africa by 7 runs in the T20 World Cup 2024 final played at Kensington Oval in Barbados on June 29, 2024. After leading the Men in Blue to their first ICC title win after 11 years, Rohit, while speaking to reporters during a post-match press conference, confirmed his retirement from the shortest format of the game. Rohit’s retirement from T20Is came as a surprise for fans because he was in red-hot form and also top-scored for the Men in Blue in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Almost a year after his retirement from T20Is, Rohit opened up about his decision and said that he had already made up his mind to quit after the T20 World Cup.
“When I announced my retirement from T20Is… agar hum nahi jeet-te (T20 World Cup), toh mai waise he announce kar deta kyuki bahut try kar liya ab. It’s not fair for me to continue; you have to give chances to the others. But after winning, you feel that you still have it in you; you are playing well, and you have given the result as well, so why not? Why not continue? Because this place that you have earned by no means came to you just like that. You worked really hard for it. I know what all I have done in my life and all the things I have gone through to get this. So I have an idea of all these things. So why do you want to leave? If you are batting well, giving results, then why?” Rohit said in an interview with Vimal Kumar on his YouTube channel.
“If you are not able to give results, not bat well, and something is going wrong, then it’s okay. Then in any way you have to tell yourselves that ‘Mate, it’s over.’ But I batted well in the T20 World Cup; the result was also good – happy times. Then why? But andar se ek feel aa jaata hai ki yaar abhi yaha par…” he added.
Rohit, who is one of the three Indian captains to win the ICC trophy, finished his T20I career with 4231 runs in 159 matches. The Mumbai-based cricketer is the most capped player in the shortest format of the game, and he also holds the record of scoring the most runs and sixes in T20Is.
