Major Russian firms are hiring Indian workers for metal, machinery, and construction jobs, offering attractive salaries despite the physically demanding nature of the work

Russia is currently facing a significant shortage of workers, primarily due to the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, which has seen thousands of Russian youths enlisted in the army. This shortage is severely impacting factories and construction companies across the country. In a bid to address this issue, Russia is turning to India to recruit approximately 1 million workers by the end of 2025. These workers will be employed in various cities and industries throughout Russia.
To facilitate this large-scale recruitment, Russia is establishing a new system in India to expedite visa and documentation processes. According to a Moneycontrol report, major Russian companies are looking to fill positions in metal factories, machine manufacturing, and construction sectors with Indian workers. Despite the physically demanding nature of these jobs, attractive salaries are being offered to incentivise the workforce.
This endeavour presents a significant opportunity for Indian workers, though it comes with its challenges. The harsh Russian winter, where temperatures can plummet to minus 15 to 20 degrees Celsius, poses a considerable hurdle.
Additionally, differences in food habits and language barriers may create difficulties, as Russian is predominantly spoken and vegetarian food is scarce. However, Russian companies are committed to providing warm clothing, quality accommodation, and meals to ensure Indian workers do not face undue hardships.
Recruitment efforts have already commenced, with some Indian workers currently employed in Russia. The initial batch of workers has been dispatched to cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg, where they have undergone preliminary training. Around 4,000 Indians have applied, and work has begun in Kaliningrad. Furthermore, Russian companies are actively setting up recruitment camps in India to streamline the hiring process.
Russia is also looking beyond India, planning to recruit workers from countries such as Sri Lanka and North Korea. There are prospects for a specialised agreement between India and Russia, which would provide Indian workers with training in Russian language and machinery operations before their deployment.
This opportunity is highly significant for India, particularly for individuals skilled in technical or construction work. The salaries offered in Russia could surpass those in India, potentially improving the financial conditions of many families. With proper preparation, this initiative could pave the way for a better future for Indian workers. However, it is crucial for individuals to consider the vastly different country, language, and weather before making the move.
