A total of 14 wickets fell on Day 1 of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final, which is taking place between South Africa and Australia at Lord’s. Australia, after being invited to bat first by South Africa captain Temba Bavuma, posted a total of 212 runs in 56.4 overs and then dismissed four South African batters for just 43 runs in 22 overs.

All-rounder Beau Webster top-scored for the Baggy Greens by smashing 72 runs from 92 balls, and legendary batter Steve Smith scored 66 off 112 deliveries. For South Africa, pacer Kagiso Rabada picked up five wickets, and three Aussie batters were sent back to the pavilion by Marco Jansen.

During the eventful first day, a lot of records were broken by players from both teams.

Here’s a look at the list of records broken during Day 1 of the WTC Final.

(*) Kagiso Rabada becomes the 2nd bowler after Kyle Jamieson to take a five-wicket haul in the WTC final. The 30-year-old fast bowler from Johannesburg finished with figures of 5 for 51 in 15.4 overs.

(*) By taking his fourth wicket of the 1st innings in the form of Beau Webster, Rabada took his tally of wickets to 331 in Test cricket, and it helped him break Allan Donald’s record of 330 Test wickets for South Africa. The 72-Test veteran is only behind Dale Steyn (439), Shaun Pollock (421), and Makhaya Ntini (390) in the list of leading wicket-takers for South Africa in Tests.

(*) Rabada now holds the record for taking the most wickets for South Africa in Tests at Lord’s. In five innings of three Tests at the Home of Cricket, Rabada has picked up 18 wickets, which is three more than Morne Morkel’s tally of 15.

(*) Steve Smith becomes the first batter to score more than 200 runs in the World Test Championship finals. In three innings of two matches, he has 217 runs to his name. India’s Ajinkya Rahane is second on the list with 199 runs in four innings of two matches.

(*) Steve Smith scored 66 runs from 112 balls on Wednesday, and his knock helped him break the record of most runs by a non-English batter in Tests played at Lord’s. Smith has scored 591 runs in six Lord’s Tests, and former Australian batter Warren Bardsley is second on the list with 575 runs.

(*) Smith has registered 18 50-plus scores in Test matches played on English soil, which is the most by a non-English player. He went past Viv Richards’s and Allan Border’s record of 17 50-plus scores each.

(*) Travis Head scored 11 runs from 13 balls for Australia in the first innings, but that was enough to help him go past Kumar Sangakkara (320) and Rohit Sharma’s (322) tally of runs and become the second leading run getter in ICC finals. Head has 329 runs to his name in four innings of three ICC finals. Only Virat Kohli (411) is ahead of Head now.
